Long Bio

Marcia Sirota is a Toronto-based psychiatrist and the founder of the Ruthless Compassion Institute. Through the Institute, she empowers people to lead more conscious, connected and meaningful lives; helping them to be happier within themselves, in their relationships and at work.

Marcia’s career journey began after receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy, specializing in the philosophy of science. She then combined her interests in science and service by entering the medical profession.

While working as a family doctor, she noticed that many of her patients’ problems originated from mood and stress disorders, addiction, and unhappy relationships. This observation led to her to becoming a psychotherapist.

After practicing the skills of psychotherapy for a few years, she realized that she needed to go deeper which led her to a 4-year residency in psychiatry in Brooklyn, New York. She then practiced in the New York City medical system for a year, returning home to Toronto in 2001. She then established a private psychotherapy practice, doing individual and group therapy. She founded the Ruthless Compassion Institute in 2009, to bring her ideas to a larger audience. Through articles and books and speaking, workshops and online courses, Marcia continues to share the benefits of living with Ruthless Compassion with Canadians and everyone across the globe.

Marcia is the author of Emotional Overeating (Praeger Press, 2021) and the four-volume Short and Sweet Guides to Life, including her most recent addition to the series: Be Kind, Not Nice: How to Stop People-pleasing, Build Your Confidence, and Discover Your Authentic Self. She has appeared as a mental health expert on TV Ontario, CBC radio and television, and on a wide variety of radio shows.
