May 21, 2015 – The Big Carrot Thursday Night Lecture Series Presents “Be Your Best Self, and Live Your Best Life” with Dr. Marcia Sirota
The Big Carrot – 348 Danforth Avenue in Toronto – starts at 7 PM
We all want to be happier in our lives, but sometimes it’s hard to know what to do. Society says that more money and stuff, power and influence, popularity and fame will bring happiness, but 20,000-plus Instagram followers is an empty promise.
In truth, happiness comes from a state of well-being in which we’re authentic, personally responsible, empowered and in balance; it comes from meaningful relationships, work and pastimes, and from making a contribution rather than compulsively consuming.
Join Dr. Marcia Sirota of the Ruthless Compassion Institute for a lively, thought provoking discussion, “Be Your Best Self, and Live Your Best Life,” where you’ll learn how to move away from anxiety, frustration and alienation and toward your bliss.

Topics
1. What is Ruthless Compassion and How Can We Use It in Our Lives?
In this talk, I discuss what the term means, and how the bringing together of strength and kindness, toughness and gentleness, ferociousness and tolerance will enable a person to have the greatest happiness and success in life. I show how ruthless compassion can be applied to all areas of life: relationships, the workplace, finances, creativity, spirituality and in overcoming addictions.
2. Overcoming Compulsive Eating
In this talk, I show how addiction isn’t a disease but rather, a dysfunctional attempt at seeking emotional healing and self-nurturing, and how compulsive eating is no different. I show how the “child within” drives the over-eating behavior and how diets can’t work because they cause further feelings of deprivation in someone who feels deprived to begin with.
I show how someone can begin to heal the emotional wounds left over from childhood, and learn how to give themselves the love care and reassurance they need. I show how to identify and reject the negative self-talk that perpetuates shame and self-criticism and how to develop an empowered adult identity which will enable someone to finally be free of the obsessive thought patterns and compulsive behaviours involved in over-eating and all other addictions.
3. How to Have a Healthy Relationship
In this talk, I explore what it means to be in a healthy relationship and the importance of meaningful intimacy, honest communication and a solid commitment. I discuss the “Five R’s” of a healthy relationship: Respect, Reasonableness, Rationality, Responsibility and Reliability, and why they’re essential in any good, long-term committed relationship.
I discuss the difference between a healthy relationship and an unhealthy one and give tips on how to tell if your relationship isn’t a good one, and how you might be able to make it better. I discuss the way men and women have different needs and ways of communicating and how these things must be recognized in order to have a healthy relationship.
