What is your “best self?” It’s a bit of an abstract concept, to be sure. In my opinion, your best self is the self you’d be if there had been nothing to interfere with your normal development into a fully functioning adult.
Unfortunately, even for the most beloved and well cared-for child, life has a way of throwing a monkey wrench into the works. There are so many bad things that can happen to a young person- war, famine and environmental disasters are just the beginning.
A person can experience bullying from classmates or even a teacher; there can be the death of a parent or sibling; the family’s economic situation could worsen; there could be an upsetting move away from the child’s familiar environment and friends; the child herself could experience a serious illness; her parents could become antagonistic toward each-other or get divorced; the child could have an undiagnosed learning disorder which makes her feel “stupid” and ashamed; a neighbor or babysitter or family friend could attempt to molest the child.
These are only some of the things that could wound a child when she’s growing up and, despite the fact that her parents love her and care for her, she could grow into adulthood unable to express all the best aspects of herself.
As she becomes an adult, there can be further wounding in the form of disappointments in love, career or friendships. All of these things could make it that much more difficult for her to be the best version of herself possible.
It’s really sad when a person can’t be her best self. Life will never be as rich, fulfilling or enjoyable as it could be when a person is able to manifest their full potential.
Fortunately, it’s possible to discover this best version of yourself and to bring it into being. This coming July 2014, at a 5-day retreat in beautiful Hockley Valley, Ontario, we’ll be exploring what got in the way of you living your life as the best version of you that you could be.
We’ll work on letting go of all the attitudes, beliefs, expectations and habits that you picked up along the way and on becoming the fabulous, creative, loving and empowered you that you’ve always wanted to be.
